Bali News - Eco-friendly Agriculture Conserves Bali

The importance of environmental conservation and awareness of back-to-nature techniques are now being started in Bali. Local farmers are cultivating their land by utilizing organic fertilizers, without chemical agents. “Assuredly, this trend is inseparable from the progressively increasing awareness of the entrepreneurs and farmers of Bali to develop the eco-friendly agricultural system,” said I Gusti Bagus Narayana, Subdivision Head of Horticultural Product Development, Bali Agricultural Services for Food Plant.

By this method, the agricultural system undertaken is not only improving the structure of soil but also minimalizing the utilization of chemical fertilizer that has a more detrimental impact on the environmental conservation and agricultural products themselves.
Greenhouse Method is one of the methods developed in several locations in Bali like Buleleng, Tabanan and Northern Badung. The location can be reach around 1 hour drive from Seminyak. Some varieties developed consist of assorted fruits, vegetables and flowers. “Their products have been exported to some countries like China, Korea and Singapore,” he told Bali Travel News.

One of the private companies that intensely focus on the development of this organic variety is Moena Fresh. The company established since 1985 would like to introduce products that are not only healthy but also eco-friendly. “Originally, the idea of establishing this company was to make local products become representative of the region. Apart from being healthy, the local organic products are also competitive with foreign products,” said Nyoman Agung Diatmika, General Manager of PT Moenaputra Nusantara.

He added, the fruits sold by this company are mostly consisting of organic fruits that are produced by local home farming in Bali. They work in cooperation with the Udayana University to develop organic plants in Eastern Denpasar. “Through this program, we’d like to inform the farmers that products can grow well without utilizing chemical substance,” he said while adding, by paying attention to quality and customer satisfaction the company puts a priority on health factors.

Different aspects are implemented by the Plaga Agritourism (BAP) situated in Northern Badung. This is an agribusiness company relying on the agriculture sector but it is specially made into a package as a tourist’s attraction. Other than being intended for fruits, vegetables and flowers, Bali today has developed paddy cultivation by implementing organic methods. Starting with the program of Rice Intensification System, the government is intensively developing this organic system for the sake of health and environmental conservation. (BTN/008)
